The details
Forms, deadlines and common mistakes
What the Federal Tax Filing process involves, so you know what to expect before you start.
Forms involved
- Form 1040
- U.S. individual income tax return for citizens and resident aliens
- Form 1040-NR
- Return for nonresident aliens with U.S.-source income
- Schedules 1–3, A, B, C, D, E
- Extra income, itemized deductions, interest and dividends, self-employment, capital gains, rental income
- Form 4868
- Automatic six-month extension of time to file (not to pay)
Key deadlines
- April 15
- Federal return and any tax owed for the previous year
- October 15
- Extended deadline to file if Form 4868 was submitted by April 15
A due date on a weekend or legal holiday moves to the next business day. See all tax deadlines.
Common mistakes we fix
- Filing Form 1040 when you are still a nonresident (common for F-1 students), or 1040-NR when you have become a resident
- Leaving out income from India or other countries once you are a U.S. tax resident
- Missing a 1099 (interest, brokerage, freelance) that the IRS already received
- Treating an extension as more time to pay — interest and penalties still apply after April 15
Pricing
Fees depend on how complex your situation is — for example the number of forms, states, accounts or years involved. You get a quote before any work begins, and there is no charge for the first conversation.
